P A N I C

In times of panic, it's human nature for our brains to go into a fight or flight response. The definition of fight or flight is a physiological reaction that occurs in the presence of something that is terrifying, either mentally or physically. The response is triggered by the release of hormones that prepare your body to either stay and deal with a threat, or to run away to safety. Also known as the "acute stress response", this neurological, yet psychological, response is most common in anxiety disorders. I experience this response pretty much every day of my life. It can fog up your mind and common sense, by trying to avoid the situation. When suffering from any mental illness, your mind is your own worst enemy. Do not underestimate how powerful the human brain is.

Recently, our nation is being swept by some pretty scary news- the corona virus. However, the news is making it out to be worse than it really is. Yes, it is a highly contagious virus, but, it is also a very curable and flu-like illness that is not concerning for most Americans. The people most at risk are older people over the age of 60, compromised immune systems, and those with underlying health conditions like heart or lung issues. However, our society still manages to panic. When this all hit the news last Wednesday and Thursday, the terrified public rushed to the store to get an abundance amount of supplies, TOO MANY supplies. This was the start of a very chaotic domino affect of everyone else now having to rush to the store and get what they need due to the fact of those few people being greedy and buying up the stores whole isle of stuff, like toilet paper. I mean, come on people, of ALL the supplies you would need, why an insane amount of TP? Besides, this isn't Armageddon; a biochemical, foreign illness isn't the end of the world.

My main concern at the moment is the hostility showcased towards others about all of this. Why do most portray is as "Every man for himself!". Shouldn't a world-wide epidemic like this help encourage others to grow closer as a community and work together through out this time of panic? Unfortunately, that is not the case. The 21st century is a society filled with self-indulgent, egotistical people. Now this is most certainly not everyone, but it's a good amount of the population. This is where faith comes into play. No matter how unreliable human beings are, The Lord is always going to be there for us. During hardships, we should be our trust in Him and His will, not the secular world. The Holy Spirit is ALWAYS with us, even if the doesn't feel like it sometimes. There are several Bible verses to back this up. Romans 8:28 states, "and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose". From my youthful perspective, Proverbs, Psalms, Isaiah, and Joshua are all books in the Bible that talk more about trusting God and relying on Him for strength during hardships. "Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5).

Now this whole corona virus crisis will eventually fade away, and our community will return back to somewhat of a normality. The real question is, how strong will your faith be then? Will you still be as close to God as you were during this whole quarantine event? Once our busy, on-the-go lives start up again, it might seem more difficult to find time in the day for devotions or even just reading the Bible. However, I think we all should make the effort to set aside a specific time every day to spend time with God. After all, it's the least we can do. The Lord is getting us through this storm; the rain will soon pass and we will finally see a rainbow! It may not seem like it will end right now, but I promise you God is in control and with Him, ALL things are possible. I found an acronym related to this virus that has been going around recently. I really enjoy it so I will list it down below :)
